Heart pounding, Denise led the way into the inner courtyard, pistol raised, edging carefully around the body of the guard she’d just shot. The bitch had been running, retreating back into the heart of the compound, but after the fight they’d had to get this far and the losses they’d suffered already, she was in no mood to be merciful.
“See anyone?” whispered Jenny behind her.
“No,” she hissed back, tersely. They were traversing a walkway of concrete flags, with a shallow, still pool of clear water on both sides. Every nerve in her body was vibrating with tension, screaming at her that she was walking into a trap- but what could she do? They’d come this far- they had to go on. At least nobody was shooting at them…
“Contact left!” snapped Jenny suddenly.
“To the right!” yelped Cleona almost at the same time. The momentary distraction meant Denise didn’t see the black-clad figure peeping around the smooth white pillared portico at the water’s edge ahead of her until it started shooting.
The bullet hit her high- went in to her chest- sent her reeling with a scream torn from her lungs. Her legs went from under her and she sprawled hard onto the concrete, feet kicking up in the air, grazing her hands and her knees like a little girl falling over on the playground- yowling and crying like one too.
The others were shooting and running, shouting in panic. All Denise could think of was that suddenly, terrifyingly, she couldn't breathe.
