Poll: Developing the Link
Added 2025-05-23 01:15:26 +0000 UTCHi everyone! I'm getting into writing some chapters where I'm finally going to be delving into the mental link a little more. I have two versions of the link that I've been considering, and want to give y'all a chance to weigh in. I can't promise I'll go one way or the other, but want to do a vibe check.
Link Idea 1: The link is a mental connection using latent telepathic abilities left over from the Ancients. It gives people increased speed, increased muscle mass, and generally makes people hardier and more difficult to defeat in combat, but other than the telepathy hand wave there's nothing particularly supernatural about it.
Link Idea 2: This is getting into more supernatural territory. It takes the mental powers thing a step further and people who are in a linked battle pair start to gain superhuman abilities that they can level up over time. Think eventually reaching crazy space wizard stuff. This hasn't been seen to its full potential in any livisk lifetime, and it'll probably turn out linking with a human makes someone more powerful.
I'm going back and forth between the two. So far this has been pretty grounded sci-fi without the crazy space wizard stuff. Them being a battle pair is already enough to give them an edge and I almost think the space wizard angle is something that deserves its own book where its explored from the beginning rather than being introduced 140,000 words in.
What are your thoughts?

2025-05-26 12:26:54 +0000 UTCI think option 1 is better, because option 2 breaks the suspense of disbelief a bit too much. A story that's just unbelievable is one that readers will struggle to feel emotions for.

2025-05-26 10:35:23 +0000 UTCI'm ok with both, but it feels like it makes sense to keep more along the grounded approach right now since that is what it has been going with. If space wizard was going to happen, I think you would have wanted to start slowly introducing changes earlier.
