Not every villain HAS to have a tragic backstory for his reasoning, not every villain HAS to have been through a life changing event to drive them to do what they do, some people just wanna watch the world burn

2020-10-12 16:41:37 +0000 UTCThis depiction of villains, boring as is seems to be for some people, is actually incredibly realistic. People always want villains to have reasons for being bigoted, murderous, etc. but real-life "bad guys" usually don't have good reasons. As an example, Jews were pretty much ostracized for centuries, discriminated against, crammed into ghettos, and blamed for when things went wrong. There was no actual reason for that, no one in the Nazi party (a more recent example) uncovered some grand scheme by the Jews or was injured by the Jewish community as a whole. People who want to grab power simply need justification and often blame some distinct group for their problems - doesn't matter if it's Jews, Mexicans, or every single Muslim on the planet. And that propaganda attracts others who listen to this nonsense for personal reasons or in order to justify their own actions. I quite like the more realistic depiction of villainy in One Piece, which is full of comedy and over-the-top stuff. Some have reasons, some have great backstories, some are just psychopaths, some believe in their own version of justice that doesn't seem just to us outsiders, some are simply indoctrinated. I would actually say the Celestial Dragons are very similar to Hordy and Co., indoctrinated for centuries, from birth, to believe themselves as superior beings, gods even. Much like the New Fish-Man Pirates believe themselves to be superior beings, chosen by the heavens. It's funny, considering the hate they have for each other.

This arc really does emphasize the idealistic of discrimination and how one bad apple can rot a few others that cause a rift in their own society.

2020-10-12 13:05:50 +0000 UTCI actually think this fits with the overall meaning behind what we're seeing here though better than if he for example had his family killed or had been a slave or something. He's a product of indoctrination and prejudice and group mentality etc. There's nothing there, he's just been fed the idea that humans are bad and in that group of his overblew it and made it an absolute truth that they are the most bad thing imaginable. And if the facts don't match that he completely rejects anything that goes against the idea he's taken to and made himself believe no matter how illogical. I don't care for Hordy as a character or villain much personally but I have a more positive opinion on the meaning lying in the way he is. There is point in him being empty I suppose because that's the thing. And he also represents a real reality quite well since people like him clearly exists and real "villains" are often not very interesting as people or even have good reasons for being the way they are.
