Russia-Ukraine Flash Report 05 APR 2023 12:00 PDT - Bakhmut Update

Small adjustment to the war map. Russian sources are reported fighting in the area of the Atlantic Hotel, which we had coded as under Russian control and based on the map released by PMC Wagner and claims made by multiple Russian sources.

It is possible, given the nature of urban warfare, that it was under control at the time of the report. Given the new information, we've adjusted the map, moving the line of conflict 1 to 2 city blocks east.

Reports we're receiving indicate that the current lines of defense are stable, with very heavy fighting in the city center. Fighting has been described as not like Severodonetsk or Mariupol but closer to Rubizhne or Popasna, with a lot less Russian artillery and less combat potential.

That's a great point Linnea. There are Finns alive today who lived through a Russian invasion. I hope the neglect of their military, if it happens at all, wouldn't happen for at least a generation. Today's Finns and the upcoming generation already have that military readiness deeply ingrained in them. I hope I don't sound like some right wing nut implying that the USA is the only one funding their military as the USA is as guilty as anyone. At almost any point in our history we were completely unprepared to protect ourselves or our allies. Actually, other than the 4 year period right after ww2 when we were the only nation with nuclear weapons I can't think of a time period when we were as militarily advanced and prepared as we are now and that is only because of the 20 year war we are coming out of. Thanks for all the incredible work you guys do. I can't imagine how much effort goes into the analysis and research. CNN really needs to pick you guys up. Slava Ukraini

I would argue that Finland has a unique perspective on military preparedness, and their absurdly long border with RUS is quite the incentive. From what I have observed, Finland is very proud of their ability to stand up to RUS militarily, and I don’t see that changing. Finnish patrons, please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Thank you again.

Yes. In the end Russia captured the "town" by literally destroying it. They destroyed the critical rail depot they wanted to gain intact and left the town so ruined the LNR has no plans to rebuild it

I think it is a double edged sword that Finland entered NATO. On the one hand, currently, they are very capable militarily and are a great addition. On the other hand, now that they are part of NATO I have to assume that they will cut military spending and neglect their military forces knowing that the USA is obliged to assist them if attacked. At least that is what every single NATO country with the exception of Turkey has done (e.g. Spain's 100 Leopard tanks in storage of which only 6 turned out to be nothing but rusted hulks, countries only spending a fraction of the budget that NATO says they are supposed to spend on their militaries, etc, etc). Really as much as other countries rely on the USA for support of their militaries it is very fortunate that this conflict in Ukraine happened when it did. The USA was just coming out of 20 years of continuous war. Our supplies of ammunition and quality of our weapon systems are extremely and abnormally high. Almost any other time in our history the USA would not have enough supplies to have made any difference in ukraine. I hope this Is a HUGE wake up call to NATO.

Wait, wasn't Popasna like an onslaught of artillery and fab500?
