Some Master Studies

Some Master Studies

Lately I've been feeling a bit burnt out  and have found that a good way to not sulk and completely depress about it is to do some master studies (or probably just studies in general, but this seemed more fun), so here are some Degenesis characters and Even Amundsen studies.

I think a big part of the reason why I stress over art is focusing on the final product and having too h...

Painting Studies for the Dragon

Painting Studies for the Dragon

Here are a couple painting studies done for the dragon, along with a WIP shot. I think the dragon has around 3 more hours to go till finish(mostly in the mouth and figuring out if I want to add the rider) I'll be posting the process video going from the drawing I've already posted to the finished painting when I'm done with it!

Regarding the studies, I did the gaping komodo dr...

Dragon Drawing

Dragon Drawing

Here's the final drawing for that Fellbeast design. The original was done in pencil and then tweaked and changed a bit digitally.

I've also included the sketches for the drawing (those were done on A3 format, so they couldn't fit in my scanner, hence the crappy pictures :D) I tried out a couple poses and then did 2 similar versions of a chosen pose to hone in on what I wanted. I used a lo...

A bunch of studies for a Dragon

A bunch of studies for a Dragon

Here are some sketch drawings in preparation for a Fell-beast painting for CDC. The beasts are described as more bird-like in the LOTR book, so I studied a lot of bird beaks and (obviously) lizards, since their design's got a lot of pterodactyl influence. Bird mouths are pretty terrifying.

I also did some studies from Justin Gerard (2021-01-25 22:12:30 +0000 UTC View Post

Some anatomy coming together

Some anatomy coming together

Been working on more doggies and have gone through neck, shoulder and upper arm anatomy. Things are starting to come together, but I won't go through the legs yet, and instead, I'll work only on drawings from reference and invention tomorrow, since those two have been suffering.

Also a pretty bland creature design of a flying fox, but I'm alright with em being shitty still :D

My Biggest Mistake When Studying Anatomy

My Biggest Mistake When Studying Anatomy

Here are some more doggy studies, and I want to use this post to talk about how wrongly I went about studying anatomy when I was first learning it as just a wee lad, and warn against going about it in this way.

I had the wrong conception that I could somehow learn the anatomical theory enough to be prepared to start working on actual figure drawings, which couldn't ...

Animal Studies

Animal Studies

Figured I'd share some thoughts about studying a subject you're unfamiliar with, in my case, particularly animals. Firstly, I do have a fair bit of knowledge about human anatomy, which makes the task  of getting a good handle on animals a lot less daunting, and helps me structure (what I hope is) an effective plan.

Another thing particular to animals is the fact that once you get a g...

Here's the process for the 5th day of creatuanary! I also included a couple quick digital studies so you an clearly see the correlation and their use on the final painting, hope that's useful!

I also did some drawing studies for this one, might scan my drawing studies and post them here as well, I think they'd be interesting

Roach-Pig!

Roach-Pig!

This one was a bit quicker and more of a drawing, rather than a painting - I worked with line pretty much from start to finish, which is a pretty comfortable process for me.

This drawing was more about the design of the creature and the narrative moment with the buggies, plus I wanted to finish it a bit faster, so I didn't bother with any environment or elaborate painted light setup...

Monkey Warrior Process

3rd creatuanary - I did one quicker painting in the evening yesterday and didn't like it, so I did some studies and sketching and made another painting today.  I decided to include the 1st painting as well, just as a comparison and a reminder (to myself as well) what kind of difference some preparation can make.

In my case, good ideas usually come from doing some quick studies ...

Creatuanary 2 - Bloodsucker Dragon Process

Creatuanary 2 - Bloodsucker Dragon Process

The process for this painting was a lot more streamlined than the last once, since I had a much clearer idea of what I was going for and thus wanted more control over the way the creature turned out.

As with most paintings, I did an hour or two of quick pencil studies, getting familiar with dragons, bats, and even a few gloves, just to fill up my visual library and prepare better. I...

Two Paintings

Two Paintings

I figured I'd post the first painting I did for this challenge, since I think it was quite a bit weaker than the second one, although the second one, being more ambitious, still doesn't read too well.

I think a big part of liking your work comes not from the final product, but the process. If the way you worked on a painting was forced, stale or you just couldn't get into the flow, ...

Study Process

Study Process

For the first part, I focused the most on the lighting situation, with that light pocket being cast on the pirate's hand and thigh. I also experimented a bit with the process, initially laying temperatures in with a big soft brush and painting over that with a more textured brush.

After that I just did a quick line drawing of the figure, focusing mostly on the form of the folds and ...

Studies

Here are some studies I did for a client illustration with a goblin tribe - I wanted to work on specific things such as that monkey's skin texture and the black steel material I would use for most of the goblins' armor.

Specificity in studies, in  this context (meaning outside of learning fundamentals), is what's really going to get you better at painting from invention, becaus...
