As you guys have no doubt noticed, I have a ton of costumes. I don't have an office or a studio space, so they stay in my house. Since I moved into my current place three years ago, the costumes have been living on the floor of the closet in my home office. I kept them in neat piles, which progressively became more disheveled over time - especially around Mardi Gras. But every once in a while, ...

Topic suggested by the wonderful Stonewall Brigade, my $50 patrons. Thank you all so much for your continued support!
This video's a throwback to the early days of the channel for sure. I tried to replicate the more scholarly/serious tone of my old shot-on-location King Philip's War videos.

I'm doing some long-planned essential travel in New England, and today shot a video about the Great Swamp Fight of King Philip's War very near to the location where the battle and subsequent massacre occurred – as voted on by my $50 patrons in a poll a while back. (thank you guys!) This is the monument to the fight, erected in 1906, a long forgotten crumbling ruin deep in the woods of Rhode I...

Hey all, noticed a couple things about the new video I needed to change so I re-exported and uploaded it. Now I suppose it's as done as it'll ever be. (The previous early access post has been deleted)

Hey all! Well, the 3-D video about early film is finally done, after what – five weeks? two days? help me to recollect – of pretty much doing nothing but working, eating and sleeping. I started writing and researching this one before I shot the latest Checkmate Lincolnites so it's been in the works for more than a month at this point. It nearly crashed my computer and destroyed my sanity, b...

Unfortunately, Amazon removed my movie ALIEN, BABY! from Prime Video. The reasons they gave me were unclear and unspecific. Normally I would contact their support team to complain, but they also informed me that they were "not accepting resubmission of impacted titles," or in other words, "you're shit outta luck, kid!"
So I've uploaded the film in its entirety to YouTube in an unlisted vi...

Probably a couple months out, but I think it has potential.
In other news, new video coming Friday that I shot toward the beginning of the month and is currently available for early access. Been hard at work writing the 3-D video for the last several days, which keeps getting bigger and more complicated ... planning on shooting it next week and releasing it the week after that.

Prepare yourself for THRILLS that will LEAP out of your screen! I'm working on a video (coming out in around 2-3 weeks) that you will need a pair of red-cyan 3D glasses to fully enjoy. It's the one I've been planning for a while about magic lanterns and the early history of filmmaking!
They're readily available for cheap at large online retailers. This Ebay link is selling 2 pairs for $2....

This was an utter misery to shoot (took about 8 hours) but I think it turned out pretty well. Definitely a more complex and nuanced topic than anything I've tackled on Checkmate Lincolnites before. Enjoy!

The script is 17 pages. "War of Northern Aggression" was 12 pages and ended up with a 17-minute runtime.
Filming on Friday.

Well, this early access is absurdly early! This video is part of the history YouTuber collaboration Project France, and Cynical Historian and I made "companion pieces" about Franco-American relations in the late 18th and early 19th century. He tends to make all his videos way ahead of time, so I was kind of working on his schedule for this one.
Btw, the new Checkmate Lincolnites ...

I haven't been posting videos to YouTube as regularly in recent weeks, but I'm still keeping busy. Juggling multiple projects at the moment, all of which are pretty elaborate. I don't know if I'll be able to get another video out by the end of the month, but I promise that there are some really exciting videos coming in August and September that'll hopefully knock your socks off. Here's what's ...

FYI, I apologize in advance – if you became a $5 or more patron after the evening of 6/29, you won't be in the credits of the next two videos in this series (coming out on July 2nd and 3rd), as I edited the three videos simultaneously. Just know I haven't forgotten about you! If you'd like, I can add shout-outs in the descriptions.

Hey all, just wanted to give you a quick update about what's next for the channel: it'll be a three part review of the film Gettysburg, and I'm planning to release the videos on July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, the anniversary of the battle.
The review will be less of a "takedown" and more of a breakdown of the movie's strengths and weaknesses. The first video will be an artistic review, ...

I just took a week off from videos, partially to give myself some personal time, but also to catch up on work for The Sudbury Devil. My co-director and I finished the shot list this week, and we've been plugging away at breakdowns of the script for special effects, lighting and production design. We've also been talking to a semi-famous Wampanoag actor to appear in a cameo, and we can ...

Hey y'all, Patreon is being required by law in some countries, as well as several American states, to start charging sales tax to some Patreon pledges starting July 1, 2020.
According to Patreon, "Less than half of all patrons will be charged sales tax, and for most, the amount will be very small. For example, sales tax rates in the US range from 4% to 11%, so on a $5 pledge, that w...
